This is a story where a good deed was repaired in the most sadistic way. This is the story of the tragic death of Adam Simjee, a 22-year-old student at the University of Central Florida in Cheaha State Park in Clay County, Alabama on August 14, 2022.
The Beginning.
On that fateful day, Adam Simjee and his 20-year-old girlfriend, Mikayla Paulus, who was also a student at the University of Central Florida were a couple on a romantic trip in their van and had come to the park purposely to see the waterfalls in the state park.
At around 11:30 am, they were in their van when they were flagged down by two women, Yasmine Hider and her friend, Krystal Diane Pinkins, by the side of the road in Talladega National Forest. They claimed they were having trouble with their car. Adam and his girlfriend pull over to lend them a hand in fixing their car. Unknown to the pair, the women had faked the whole situation, and even though the car had broken down, they intended to rob them.
Adam and Paulus did everything they could to jump-start the car but there was no success. After trying for so long, Paulus decided to call her father who is a mechanic, but as she brought out her phone to make the call, she heard a voice yell from behind her, “Empty your pockets and walk into the woods” This voice came from Yasmine. She was no longer playing games, it was time to carry out the deal she had been waiting for.
Adam told her everything they had was in the van and she could have it. But before Yasmine could go to the van, he pulled out his concealed gun and ordered her to get on the ground. She was taken aback and exclaimed, “Are you serious?” and then cocked her gun and fired. A shootout ensued and as he returned fire, a bullet struck him in the abdomen.
While Adam was on the ground, Yasmine who was already wounded with three bullets to her abdomen and one to her leg asked him, “Why did you shoot, it wasn’t supposed to be like this.” Sadly, Adam was badly injured and even when the paramedics came following Paulus’ call, he could not be revived. Adam Simjee lost his life while playing a Good Samaritan. His kindness was repaired with wickedness.
Yasmine’s accomplice and friend, Pinkins, took to her heels once the shots were fired. After the emergency responders came, they found her in a camping ground, some distance away from the crime scene. When the officers ordered her to get on her knees, her 5-year-old son came out of the woods holding a loaded shotgun.
At the crime scene, the paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive Adam. Yasmine who had sustained four gunshot wounds was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital where her injuries were surgically treated.
In the trial that followed, Yasmine pled guilty to second-degree murder, robbery, and kidnapping and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. As part of her plea bargain, she also testified against Pinkins.
